A short reference for your first hike with us — and a refresher for your fiftieth.
Meeting up
We meet at the trailhead unless the hike page says otherwise. Aim to arrive ten minutes early — we start on time so everyone gets back before dark. Your lead sends a brief a few days ahead with parking, carpooling and any last-minute changes.
Pace and regrouping
Nobody hikes alone. We regroup at junctions and viewpoints, and a lead stays at the back. Beginner hikes are social and photo-stop friendly; intermediate hikes keep a steadier pace. Take the level that fits you today, not the one you think you should manage.
Weather and turning back
Leads make the call on lightning, ice, smoke and heat, and they'll post changes on the hike page and in the chapter group. Turning back is a normal part of hiking with us — the trail will still be there.
Trail etiquette
Pack out everything, including fruit peels. Stay on trail through switchbacks and meadows. Yield to uphill hikers and horses. Keep music on headphones so everyone gets the quiet they came for.
Dogs and kids
Each hike page says whether dogs are welcome — it depends on the trail and the group size. Kids join by arrangement with the lead so we can match the hike to their pace.
Safety and sharing
Fill in your emergency contact in your account before your first hike. Leads carry a first-aid kit and know the group's route. Tell someone at home where you're going, even though you'll be with us.
If plans change
Cancel from your account any time before the hike so someone on the waitlist can take your spot. No explanation needed, and no hard feelings.
