7.5 miles. 2,132 feet of gain. Wildflowers, wildlife, and ridgeline views that make the early alarm completely worth it.
The Butler Fork Loop takes you deep into the Mt. Olympus Wilderness above Big Cottonwood Canyon β steep from the start, rewarding the whole way up. This one's for the elevation chasers who want a real morning in the mountains. We're starting at 6:30 AM sharp (try to arrive by 6:15 so we can move together). π
What to Expect
It climbs steeply right out of the gate β no warmup on this one. Packed dirt trail with some creek crossings and a few fallen trees along the way. Once you're up, the ridgeline opens up with peak views, wildflowers in full bloom, and solid chances of wildlife sightings (moose country). Shaded sections make the effort feel worth it even mid-climb.
What to Bring
3L of water (minimum β this is a long one)
Bug spray + sunscreen
Snacks or a light lunch for summit stops
Hiking boots (not trail runners β real ankle support helps here)
Hiking poles if you have them
Sun shirt + light layers
Good attitude and some grit π
Parking Note: Parking is free, first come first serve β limited spots. Arrive early. You can park on either side of the road off the shoulder. No permit required.
Dogs: Not on this one β no dogs for this hike.
