Mt. Olympus — Summit Series
Saturday, May 16 | 6:00 AM Start | Mt. Olympus Trailhead
Mt. Olympus isn't just a hike, it's a rite of passage in the Wasatch. This iconic peak towers over the Salt Lake Valley, and summiting it is one of the most rewarding days you'll have on trail this year.
This is Summit Series Hike #3, and it's where the Series starts to bite. Expect a steep, relentless climb, a short scramble to the summit, and some of the most jaw-dropping views in Northern Utah.
The details:
7.1 miles out-and-back
4,200 ft elevation gain
7–9 hours on trail
Difficulty: Strenuous
6:00 AM start early alpine start to beat the heat and afternoon storms
What to expect:
The trail climbs steadily from the very first step, no warm-up, no flat section to ease into. You'll switchback up the west face of the mountain, passing through oak brush and scree before reaching the saddle.
From the saddle, the final push to the summit involves a short Class 2/3 scramble using hands on rock. It's not technical, but it requires focus, good footing, and comfort with some exposure. The summit itself delivers 360° views spanning the entire Salt Lake Valley, the Wasatch Range, and beyond.
Who this hike is for:
Hikers with solid cardiovascular fitness and experience with sustained uphill climbs
Women comfortable with scrambling and light exposure
Hikers who've done peaks like Grandeur, Gobblers Knob, or Enniss Peak
Anyone building toward the end of Summit Series
Not for:
Beginners or first-time summit hikers
Anyone uncomfortable with heights or hands-on rock
Unsure if this is right for you? DM me or email before registering, I'm happy to chat it through.
The 6 AM start matters:
Early starts on Olympus aren't optional in our book, they're strategic:
Beats the heat on the fully sun-exposed climb
Gets us off the summit before potential afternoon thunderstorms build
Guarantees parking at the small, popular trailhead
Gives us buffer for a slower pace without feeling rushed
Plan to arrive by 5:45 AM. Coffee and calories before you go.
What's included:
Pre-hike safety briefing at the trailhead
Two lead hikers (front and back of group)
Multiple regroup points throughout the climb
A dedicated scramble briefing before the final summit push
A vetted, supportive group of women ready to push through the hard parts with you
What to bring:
A full gear checklist will be emailed a few days before the hike. At minimum:
Sturdy hiking boots with ankle support
3+ liters of water
High-calorie snacks and a real lunch
Trekking poles
Layers (summit is colder and windier)
Sun protection (hat, SPF, sunglasses)
Headlamp (just in case)
Group size: Capped at 10 participants for Leave No Trace compliance.
Waiver Acknowledgment: All participants must have a completed 2026 Girls Gone Hiking waiver on file before joining any GGH hike. If you haven't already signed one for 2026, you'll receive one by email after registration and must complete it prior to hike day. Details at checkout.
