Our First Birthday Weekend!

π Pipeline Overlook via Rattlesnake Gulch β Millcreek Canyon
π₯Ύ Moderate | ~4 miles | ~790 ft Elevation Gain
β οΈ Parking is limited at the trailhead. Two start times have been scheduled so groups can cross paths and open up spots β please plan accordingly and carpool when possible.
Join Girls Gone Hikingβ’ as we celebrate our very first birthday on the trail that started it all.
One year ago, this is where it began. Rattlesnake Gulch was the trail that brought us together β and there's no better place to mark a full year of showing up, lacing up, and doing hard things side by side. We're heading back to where it all started, and we want you there with us.
The route kicks off with a signature booty-burner β nearly all of the elevation gain packed into the first 0.75 miles as you climb out of the canyon and onto the Pipeline Trail. Once you crest that ridge, the hard work gives way to sweeping, unobstructed views of the Salt Lake Valley that stretch as far as the eye can see. It's the kind of view that reminds you exactly why we do this.
We'll move at a supportive group pace, cheer each other up the steep stuff, and celebrate every step of this milestone morning.
β¨ What to Expect:
Steep, rewarding climb through Rattlesnake Gulch
Gorgeous panoramic views of the Salt Lake Valley from the Pipeline Overlook
2β2.5 hours on trail
A whole lot of love, laughs, and GGH birthday energy π
Bring water, snacks, and layers β April mornings in Millcreek can be crisp. Trail conditions may include mud or rocky sections depending on recent weather. Note that April 11 is an odd day β dogs are welcome off-leash! πΎ
Please arrive a few minutes early for your chosen wave. Registration and signed waiver are required prior to attending.

π 7:00 AM Start
π Thurston Peak via Great Western Trail β Layton, UT
π₯Ύ Hard | ~14.8 miles | 5,249 ft Elevation Gain | Summit: 9,706 ft
This is not your average Saturday hike β and that's exactly the point.
Join Girls Gone Hikingβ’ for one of the most ambitious and rewarding trails we've tackled yet. Thurston Peak is the highest point in both Davis and Morgan Counties, and the Great Western Trail route earns every bit of that summit. This is a full-day commitment: long miles, serious elevation, and the kind of physical and mental challenge that reminds you what you're truly capable of.
The trail begins with a gradual climb through dense scrub oak and switchback after switchback before opening up to ridgeline views that stretch across the entire Wasatch Front. Alpine meadows, wildflowers, and sweeping sightlines toward the Great Salt Lake, Antelope Island, and Morgan Valley greet you as you push higher. The final stretch to the summit requires a short off-trail scramble β and then you're on top of the world.
Early start time is intentional. With nearly 15 miles and 5,000+ feet of gain, we want every advantage the morning gives us. Come prepared, come committed, and come ready to dig deep alongside an incredible group of women.
β¨ What to Expect:
A serious, full-day effort β plan for 9β11 hours on trail
Relentless switchbacks giving way to stunning ridgeline and alpine meadow terrain
360Β° summit views of the Great Salt Lake, Antelope Island, and Morgan Valley
A short off-trail scramble to the true summit
Small, committed group energy β this one will bond you for life ποΈ
Come fueled and ready: bring plenty of water, high-energy snacks, trekking poles, and layers. April conditions at elevation may include snow or mud β trail runners or sturdy hiking boots required. No shade in upper sections, so sun protection is a must.
This hike is best suited for those with prior endurance hiking experience. Please assess your fitness honestly before registering.
Please arrive a few minutes early so we can start promptly at 7:00 AM. Registration and signed waiver are required prior to attending.

FAQ - Utah Chapter
π About the Utah Chapter
-
The Utah chapter is based in Salt Lake City but we hike all over β Millcreek Canyon, the Wasatch Front, Uintas, southern Utah, and everywhere in between. If there's a great trail in Utah, we'll find our way there eventually.
-
Yes. Utah is an incredible four-season destination and we take full advantage of it. Winter brings snowshoe hikes, cold-weather walks, and cozy social events. Spring and fall are peak hiking season. Summers we start early to beat the heat. There's always something on the calendar.
-
We primarily hike along the Wasatch Front β Salt Lake City, Sandy, Draper, Bountiful, and surrounding areas β but we also venture to places like the Uintas, Moab, St. George, and beyond for special trips and events. Each event listing includes the exact location.
-
The Utah chapter launched in 2025 and is the founding chapter of Girls Gone Hiking. Everything we've built β the community, the safety standards, the event model β started right here.
-
Yes. Same community, same Mel, same trails β just with a fresh look and a bigger vision as we expand nationally. The Utah chapter isn't going anywhere.
π₯Ύ Events & RSVPs
-
Yes. All Utah chapter events require advance registration through our website. Attendance is capped to keep events safe, organized, and enjoyable for everyone.
-
Friends are always welcome β but each person must register individually through the website. Unregistered guests cannot be added on-site, no exceptions.
-
Unfortunately you won't be able to join. For safety, liability, and fairness to others on the waitlist, we can't allow walk-ins even if space looks available.
-
Limits help us maintain trail safety, ensure proper waiver coverage, create a great group experience, and respect land-use and parking restrictions at trailheads.
-
Most hikes and community meetups are free unless otherwise noted. Some events β like social gatherings, special trips, or venue-based events β may have a small fee to cover costs. It will always be listed clearly on the event page.
-
After you click "Add to Cart," the event gets added to your cart β then just head to your cart to complete checkout and you're all set. We know it's a little quirky β Squarespace keeps us humble. π
-
Please cancel your RSVP through the website or email us as soon as possible so another woman can take your spot. For capped events this makes a real difference.
-
Yes. All participants must complete the GGH liability waiver before attending their first event. Once it's on file it covers you for future events unless your information changes. The waiver link will be included in your registration confirmation email.
-
Plan to arrive 10β15 minutes before start time. We use that window to check in, make introductions, and do a quick overview of the route before we head out.
π€οΈ On the Trail
-
Every event listing includes the difficulty level, mileage, and elevation gain. We host everything from easy social walks to serious summit pushes β just read the details carefully and register for what feels right for where you are right now.
-
Read the full event description β we include mileage, elevation gain, estimated time, and any technical notes so you can make an informed call. When in doubt, start with a moderate hike and work your way up. We've all been there and nobody judges.
-
Yes β and a lot of women do. GGH is literally built for this. You don't need to know anyone to show up and have a great time. By the end of the hike you'll have made friends.
-
Dogs are welcome only on events where it's explicitly stated. Always check the event description before bringing your pup. Some trailheads and event types aren't dog-friendly, and some Millcreek dates are odd/even restricted β we'll always note this in the listing.
-
Our events are women-centered. Some events welcome friends and supportive partners when noted β always check the event description for specifics.
-
Every event listing includes gear recommendations specific to that hike. In general β water (more than you think you need), proper footwear, layers, snacks, sun protection, and any trail-specific gear noted in the description. For Utah's elevation and climate swings, layers are non-negotiable.
-
Some Utah trailheads require a parking fee or day pass β Millcreek Canyon and some Wasatch Front trailheads being the most common. Each event listing will note if anything is required so you can plan ahead.
-
Safety comes first, always. If conditions become unsafe we may modify the route, reschedule, or cancel. Updates will be sent via email to registered participants and posted on our Instagram @GirlsGoneHiking.UT
π¬ Community & Staying Connected
-
Sign up for our email list β that's the best way to stay in the loop on new events, updates, and community news. You can also follow us on Instagram @GirlsGoneHiking.UT and join our Facebook community group for real-time updates.
